Growing up, I dreamed about driving fast, exotic sports cars. My single goal in life when I was 8 years old was to own a Lamborghini Murcielago when I grew up. As of right now I am not even close to having the money to buy a Lamborghini, but I’m still fascinated by fast cars. But it seems like other people from my generation don’t have the same appreciation for fast cars as I do. Apparently, my generation is into cars with alternative powertrains, such as hybrids and electrics. Also, they are more interested with their iPhone being compatible with their car and other new technology features that come with newer vehicles.
In a recent survey by Deloitte Consulting Services, over 2,000 U.S. auto consumers (677 being from Gen. Y) were asked about their preferences when it came to buying cars, or if they would even consider owning a car. From the Gen. Y responses, 59% think they will drive an alternative engine vehicle, naming hybrid electrics as their preferred choice. Also, 56% of them want technology that entertains them as they drive.
I understand that protecting the environment and fuel prices are main factors to people choosing hybrids and electrics. I agree with that, I’m all for protecting our decaying planet and its environment. But is it wrong for me to want a car that goes fast? Sure they don’t have the best mileage out there but I would enjoy the drive more. Slowly pressing harder on the gas pedal, hearing the engine roar to life as the car picks up speed. Having to look in your rear view mirror making sure there are no cops sneaking up behind as you go above the posted speed limit. That seems exciting to me. I’m not talking about driving reckless of course, I am completely against that. As for technology, I do like being able to connect my phone to listen to Pandora. But that can be done with an aftermarket piece, and it’s not my top priority.
There is one solution. Why not have both? Speed and electric power mixed into one awesome piece of engineering. I see the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive as the future of super cars, and I’m not alone. With 750 horsepower, topping off at 155 mph, this car is a perfect solution. And it does it all with zero carbon emissions. It doesn’t have a loud engine, actually almost no sound comes from it all. Sound is not important if the engine doesn’t produce any power. It’s expensive, at $538,000. But you have to look at the big picture here. Automakers can use this technology to make more affordable alternative engine cars that still have some ponies under the hood.
So there’s hope out there people, that we can all live in perfect harmony.
